Anyone in the world I was reading the sports page today. An article about the Stanley Cups mentioned teams from the "Original Six" were playing. I thought all 6 teams were all that were left but it turns out just 2 of the teams: Chicago and Detroit were playing each other. I don't think Carolina was in the original Six.
Anyway, I am a bit curious since the SJ Sharks bowed out early to the Anaheim Ducks, but the Ducks gave all Detroit it could handle. I don't think the Sharks were that bad. The Ducks were just hot with a very hot goalie.
Then, I read something that Scotty Bowman said. This guy has one 9 Stanley Cups as a coach. Pretty unbelievable: in the class of Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach. He is now helping his son with the Chicago Blackhawks, as a consultant. He is advising the coach on the team, but said that can go only so far. The Chicago coach said Mr. Bowman has been very helpful. What Mr. Bowman said was: "There is plenty of information out there'. 'It is a matter of processing that information". That is simple but profound.
I have read a lot of psychology, buddhist ideas and business ideas. I remember in "The Art of Profitablity" by Adrian Slywotzky, the author said to take one chapter at a time and try to apply it before moving onto the next chapter. I find this very difficult to do since the process of reading the book is comforting to me when I am searching. I often forget most of it, but go back when necessary.
My therapist once said when I was complaining I never finished books, "maybe you got what you needed from it". I wonder if I can get clearer about this "processing" information and get better at it. It reminds me of my process therapy training, www.processes.org, and how valuable it was. We keep hearing about focusing on the process. The results will come. That is what Phil Jackson said when he took over the LA Lakers for the first time. If they folow the process, the rings will come. I guess he was pretty confident since he had Koby Bryant and Shaq O'Neal. Coach Jackson was searching for his process when he found Tex Winter's Triangle Offense.
Have I found my system? Do I know how I learn? Knowing how one learns is a concept of "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. I know how I learn more and more. It comes from being aware. Paying attention to learning.
Thus, processing information. An important point. A new point I can bring up with business owners. When I work with owners side-by-side, I don't have to tell them. I might have to remind that. I model for them. But they figure it out. Like Robert Bly said in the Bill Moyer's special, it is important for a son to see what his father does for a living. Work was passed on from Father to Son until recently. A son can be suspicious of his Father's work if he doesn't witness it. I can attest to this. I have been suspicious of the Insurance business, the Estate Planning business. I have been lucky to see how my Father has worked for many years, none more than the last couple in being his assistant on http://jameshall.wordpress.com/ but also seeing the latter stages of his insurance days and when he moved out from the Insurance agency. I thought it was entrepeneurial even though he sais he was still part of the agency. Although I wasn't always crazy with his style, I could understand it. Capitalism is tough
Anyway, Mr. Bly said a Son gets a type of food from his Father, during work and just spending time. I would have to agree. It is an energy. I received this from my Father along with my brothers. I received something: confidence, money, knowledge - an energy. As my mentor Don Hadlock at www.processes.org said : money is just another form of energy.
There is a processing going on. I think that might be happening when I work with my clients side-by-side. For both of us. I hope to explore that more. |
